Battery Life is great; one dirty little secret March 14, 2010 S. Raquel (Chicago) This is my first review, but since I am a tech geek and one who wants to keep his gadgets safe, I thought I'd share some quick thoughts on this model. There are both some really good things about this products and some not to so great things, which I hope you will appreciate.
Background
I've had my iPhone for about 6 months and I had an iSkin on it. However, I noticed how poor the battery life was on the iPhone when I was out for more than 6 hours. I didn't want to buy the bulky extensions to add battery life, but didn't know what I would get.
I visited my local Apple store and the Morphie was relatively brand new. I had heard about them and since there were other battery options, I spent some time looking at all of them, but chose the Morphie for about $70ish bucks.
The product comes in a two piece sleeve which is amazingly easy to get off and on. It's made of a hard coated platic, which is supposed to keep it safe, but it doesn't seem like it is "shock" drop safe (i.e. - if it fell from a big distance). The holes for all of the key buttons are designed relatively well (one is harder which I'll mention later) and doesn't compromise the integrity of the phone.
One cool feature is that you can always tell the level of back-up by pressing a built in button on the back that shows up to four little lighted buttons on back. When it is plugged in, it'll stay lighted to let you know. It's kind of like those AA battery ones that when you press two buttons, it'll show you how much juice is left.
What I love:
It absolutely doubles your battery life: I couldn't believe how much this little gadget helped me get through the day. I've only used it to it's capacity one time and I believe I had full power for more than 11 hours. They tell you to switch on the battery when you get to 20% battery life, but most times you could go until 10%.
The case makes it easy to carry: While it is quite a bit heavier than most over covers, it's sleek enough and easy enough to take out of the case, unlike iSkins.
It doesn't cause any interference to talk or internet connections. I thought the big case would cause some connection or reception issues, but I haven't experienced it?
Recharging time doesn't take long: I haven't been in a pinch to recharge in a rush, but when I do, regardless if I have the "back-up" switch on or not, it'll recharge both when just sitting there. They tell you to turn the Morphie off so that it'll charge the phone first, then the Morphie, but I don't noticed it either way. It makes sense though...
What I don't love:
The power plug in isn't standard. When I bought it, I thought that I would just plug in the existing power clip and it would recharge it quickly. This is the dirty little secret of the Morphie. The plug in for the case is actually a unique size (almost looks like a USB plug) that only fits that specific case. What this means is that if you charge your iPhone in your case like I do, you have to bring the cord with you everytime you want to charge it somewhere else. Either that or you take out your iPhone and charge that only.
This gets frustrating when you are out and about and you didn't bring the power cord and need a refill. I end up taking the phone out of the case and charging it separately.
The switch is flush against the case: Okay, I'll admit it, I have no fingernails. If you have some, then flipping the switch is just fine. If not, then it's a pain and somewhat difficult. Not impossible, but definitely difficult.
The corners crack easily: I only noticed this recently. I accidently dropped my phone from a height of 3 feet as it slipped out of my hands a couple of times. The phone and the Morphie were okay, but I noticed that the top corners of the case had cracked due to the direct impact from the fall. This would have never happened with an iSkin and is the only drawback to this model. If in future models, Morphie could put a bit more protection at the corners, it'd make it much better.
Also, I haven't looked yet, but I hope they offer replacement top covers, because it looks like I'll be needing some.
Overall, I would tell you that it has been an incredible buy for me and for the money and the benefits, it's well worth it. I really dislike the specially designed plug, but it's one that is more annoying than anything else.
EXCELLENT! March 11, 2010 2manytoyz (Atlanta, GA) Nicely designed. Just the right size, ease of use, works nice as a protective case and extended battery. I bought an additional one for a company executive who kills batteries quickly. He's ultra picky and even he loves it. Data transfers through the battery connector so there is never a reason to remove the battery. You should purchase an additional charge cord as a spare. The charge cord is USB to Micro USB. I leave the battery on all the time. When the external battery dies it switches to the main battery.
Juice Pack Air performs as promised, minor ergonomic issues. March 11, 2010 Anthony A. Watson Product does exactly as it promises. The case is attractive but a little too slick. Like the iPhone without a case, slips out of the pocket a little too easily. Gets slightly warm if you turn it on after running your iPhone battery down a bit. Nice not to have to worry about running out of power when you've had to use the web or Bluetooth a lot during the day.
Say good bye to signal! March 11, 2010 A. Kintz (Corning NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm going to be going on a long flight soon and wanted a little bit of extra life to my 3GS. Figured why not get that in a full case that I can turn on and off as needed? Great in theory...
One MAJOR flaw though. You lose all kinds of service with this thing on (not even turned on, just physically attached to your phone). I had read a few reviews stating that it can affect your service - but really just assumed that it was a bar or two. That would be doable if I was still able to get signal... but worthless when it kills it completely.
I'm sitting at my desk now and with the Mophie detached and the phone sitting on my desk, I get 4 full bars of 3G service. When I attach the Mophie and put the phone back down on the desk, in the same exact place, I instantly get No Service. How is that possible? Like I said, I could understand losing a bar or two... but EVERYTHING? No way... not cool.
If that weren't bad enough... I'm actually not even happy with the rest of the case design. If you flip the silent mode switch, you can barely reach it to turn it off. I ended up using a tiny screwdriver. It also bothers me that there's so much open space at the bottom of the case to allow dirt/dust to get in between your phone and the case and scratch things up. Why can't it just fit well if it's not going to work?
The only saving grace for this (and why it gets 2 stars instead of 1) is that in my specific situation, I will still get some use out of it on the plane. Once I turn turn my phone on to Airplane Mode, I can attach the Mophie and not care about the signal while on the plane... but other than that it is totally useless. Do not waste your money.
Why-oh-why the mini USB? March 10, 2010 Harold R. Skinner (Rochester, MN) I like this product well; right down to the point where I discovered that it DOES NOT use a standard USB cable....
WHY, OH, WHY do they make me still have to carry another USB cable!!! (that makes a total of at least THREE; one for the camera, one for the BlackBerry, and now TWO for the iPhone PLUS the power block for the iPhone to plug either of these two into).
Other than this FLAW in the implementation, the concept and design is GREAT. Weight is negligble, size is a little tight for normal iPhone case, but still works, BATTERY LIFE actually makes it through a movie without a charge...
Specifications could be a little clearer about the USB cable; there are THREE types...
