false advertising September 3, 2010 takengrrr The power supply came quickly which was great but it doesn't fit my laptop which is an HP dv1000 series. When I spoke to them about the product which was $10.03 and another $4.99 shipping...they will take it back but I get to pay for shipping again and a restocking charge...they claim they never said it was for my computer...the exact model wasn't stated...just the series. By the time all is said and done they win and I get screwed...shipping costs as much as the product in the end and the $ amount back is hardly worth repacking and making a trip to the PO...I think they count on that.
Works well, just scorching hot! August 28, 2010 Mister T Don't really want to give this 5 stars, only because it seems to run much hotter than the one that came with the dv5000 originally.
Is this normal?
Poor quality August 28, 2010 shea nash (BELLINGHAM, WA, US) At first I thought all was well, it shipped fast and worked great....but after a few weeks the cord fell apart in two places. Also the part that plugs into the computer did not quite fit right. Now I have to position the cord just right and not touch it to maintain a charge. I did not treat it badly, it did not see any extraordinary wear and tear, it just apparently is cheaply made.
My Laptop Melted It; Faulty Power Jack August 25, 2010 Ann Adapter worked fine until my laptop melted it, just as it melted the original adapter that came with the laptop.
It is this melting that is causing all the complaints of improper fit. Once either the jack on the laptop or the end on the adapter have overheated, they will warp. This warping prevents a tight connection, for obvious reasons.
For anyone with these issues:
Overheating of adapter and/or laptop
Adapter plug doesn't fit all the way into laptop jack
Adapter plug is loose in the power jack
Intermittent charging - due to a bad connection between power jack and adapter
The wiring around the adapter plug becomes compromised, frayed, or loose
Have to position the adapter/wire a certain way to make it work
Cracked or broken adapter plug
Adapter plug or laptop power jack become too hot
You very likely have an overheating problem, and your laptop is now a dangerous FIRE HAZARD that should NOT be left to charge unattended or for long periods of time.
However, if you're going to continue to use the laptop despite its faulty power jack, then there are some precautions and steps you can take . . .
1. It's not a good idea to charge and run the laptop at the same time, as this causes it to overheat twice as fast.
2. A good charging method I've found is to simply let it charge while I'm doing things around the house and check it every 10 minutes or so. If the metal part of the adapter plug burns my finger, I unplug it and let it rest. Sometimes I blow on the adapter until it's cool, but it does cool down on its own quite fast.
3. I ALWAYS use a surge protector to charge this laptop (and everything else), and I recommend that you do the same. It's much easier to just flip the switch on the strip than it is to repeatedly plug in the adapter and jiggle it around until the charging indicator on the laptop comes on.
4. Don't lay it flat to charge. I usually prop mine on its side so the power jack (and the vent next to it) are pointing toward the ceiling. This seems to be the position for optimum cooling.
5. Don't lay it on bedding or carpet or anything like that - always charge (and use) it on hard surfaces that will not obstruct any of the vents.
6. Make sure all your fans are clean and working properly. Use a cooling pad if you have to.
I suppose we could all continue to buy adapters, but I really don't see the point when they're all going to end up destroyed in the end anyway. I'd much rather just charge the laptop slowly and carefully with my original adapter as opposed to leaving it to charge unattended with a "new" adapter and have it burn the house down.
Either way - do NOT trust any adapter with this machine as it's not safe. I thank my lucky stars that my HP was given to me, and it's only a secondary laptop.
Why this adapter got 3 stars:
1. The cord is much shorter than the original.
2. Compared to the original, it does seem cheaply made.
3. Melted a lot faster than my original.
AC adapter was the culprit!! August 20, 2010 Charles de la Cuadra (Colorado Springs, CO United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was excited to find out that my DV4000 HP Pavilion laptop computer only needed a replacement adapter. This after 6 years of use. My laptop would shutdown with no notice. The product was accuarate according to the specs and my laptop works perfectly now. Thanks Westronics- Electrics!!
