5 out of 5 stars Quick and easy   March 19, 2010

We don't have cable and don't watch much network television. So the only downside to the Roku box for us is that now we're watching too much TV! We hooked it up, had it running in a few minutes and that was it! It was even easy to train the universal remote that came with our base model television to emulate the Roku remote, so we don't even have to bother with multiple remotes. So far we haven't found much to watch other than Netflix, but as we already had the base plan with them, we have plenty to choose from.

DANG! This thing is AMAZING! Right now it's streaming music into my living room - I just entered the name of my favorite artist and it created a whole "radio station" playing the whole genre based off that one artists name... AMAZING! It's linked into a site called Pandora which I never knew about before.

This thing doesn't need a regular "cable" connection - it'll pickup video over wifi in any room - so all you need is a screen or monitor with built-in speakers and you can out it absolutely anywhere in the house. I'm thinking of putting another one near my treadmill which I couldn't do before without without routing messy wires everywhere.

I haven't even got to the Netflix part yet and already I want another one of these ROKU boxes!!!!

EASILY THE BEST $100 I EVER SPENT ON TECHNOLOGY!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!

The Roku player uses a modest 6 to 7 watts when it is in use.
The Roku player uses a ridiculous 6 to 7 watts when it is not in use. There is no way to turn it off short of plugging it into a power strip, switched outlet, or the like. The a/c adapter which powers the Roku is on 24/7 causing you to waste an enormous amount of electricity. I consider this to be an unconscionable design flaw.

Roku seems proud of its compact size, but they achieve this by using the external a/c adapter and omitting an on/off switch.

On the plus side, I had previously used a computer connected to a 46 inch Sony display to view Netflix. The Roku player, by being a single function device, avoids the numerous processes that modern computers do in the background and as a result does a far superior job of streaming Netflix than the computer.

I have experienced intermittent problems of the Sony TV reporting that the Roku was giving an unsupported audio signal. I have seen on discussion boards that this is not unusual when using a Sony TV with the Roku. Turning off and restarting the Roku usually corrects this, suggesting the problem is at the Roku end, not the TV.

The Roku would benefit greatly from a larger buffer to cope with fluctuations in the speed of the internet connection. Too often a brief clog in the internet stream causes a break in viewing and a degradation of video quality. I also have experienced occasional disruptions of service which appeared to have originated at the Roku server.

So long as I get 3 or 4 dots (which is most of the time) the video quality on the 46 inch Sony screen is good. At 1 or 2 dots the video quality is poor or unviewable. I would not recommend using the Roku with a screen larger than 46 inches.

The fast forward and rewind functions are awkward and perform poorly. Viewing Netflix over a computer gives a better interface for these functions.

At a cost of [...] the Roku HD player is satisfactory, but I would neither recommend it nor discourage a friend from buying one.

5 out of 5 stars Movie buff's delight   March 17, 2010

This little gadget blended into my wireless home network easily and I was watching movies from Netflix within minutes. In fact it worked so well I ordered another for my son's bedroom and canceled HBO and Cinemax from my cable company . I will thereby recover the cost of both boxes in ten months. Meanwhile we can watch a free movie whenever we like with our basic subscription to Netflix. Can't be beat for value.
I had trouble with the second box not identifying my network and called for tech. help. The tech walked me through the settings of my network and we were able to identify the problem which turned out to be I was entering the wrong password (Duh!) My bad. Excellent service. Both units working fine now and the whole family is very pleased. I have a very fast Cable modem with two desk computers,a laptop, Vonage Voip. and the two Roku boxes now on the network nothing seems to have slowed down even when everything is being used.
