1 out of 5 stars Streaming of Netflix consistently fails - Customer Support is awful   September 1, 2010
Michael Griffin (San Francisco, CA)
I've been a Roku user for almost a year, and would never buy their product again, for two key reasons:

1. Streaming issues with Netflix

Roku has a connectivity problem with Netflix Watch Instantly which causes it to drop the connection every few minutes. This makes it virtually impossible to have a good user experience with Netflix. The service works flawlessly with Amazon Video On Demand, but Netflix is a disaster. This is a widely reported problem, and from time to time, credits have been issued to users due to the problem.

2. Awful, and I mean just atrocious, customer service

Roku runs its customer service out of India. Customer service works through a set of resolution steps which completely ignore the reported issues of the customer. If customer service is unable to resolve the case, they log a ticket, and then you wait AT LEAST FIVE BUSINESS DAYS before you get your next response. The eventual response will ignore all previous case history and attempt to walk you through the same steps. Escalation to live support for technical issues is impossible. When I complained, I was told "Don't worry, you're our very special customer".

Apple may experience the same issues, and the lack of access to Amazon is definitely a shortcoming, but I would absolutely never repeat the Roku experience.

4 out of 5 stars Now I can survive my GF's cable free house   September 1, 2010
Irishwolf (Seattle, WA)
I bought the Roku HD player because my girlfriend does not believe in cable but I spend a lot of time at her house. Now I can watch movies from my Netflix cue anytime I want without having to lug my laptop and get it plugged in to her TV every day. The quality is far superior to what I was getting out of my HP notebook even though it also has an HDMI output. The Roku hardly ever needs to rebuffer, and it starts the movies much more quickly than my notebook computer does. The only reason that I took away one star is because it does not have access to Hulu for network television. Her antenna reception is terrible and it is so frustrating to try to get through an entire television show tih signal loss ever 5-10 seconds. If the Roku could stream Hulu or some other service with current, or even last week's episodes of network shows it really would replace cable.

5 out of 5 stars Love it, seriously it is the best little device.   September 1, 2010
APC (West Hollywood)
Have one in the living room (HD) and one in bedroom (XR). It is so easy to use. I love having the extra Netfix choices when I do not feel like watching cable. I have discovered that I can also rent movies from Amazon on this thing! It offers other program features that as of now I do not subscribe to. Am very happy I finally bought one, (well two).

5 out of 5 stars Big things come in small packages   August 31, 2010
Sheri (Cleveland Heights, OHIO, US)
A simple plug and play. I'm using hte wireless connection and can't believe how easy this device is to use. I use to watch netflix almost exclusively through my laptop and now rarely do so. It feels like a 'home movie theatre' experience using the Roku. It's worth the price and then some, but if you're looking for a deal - Roku offers the box at a discounted rate, but between S&H and taxes, it's less expensive through Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Roku streaming player   August 31, 2010

Really good unit. I had to call Roku to get it working , but that was no problem. Would recommend it and it is well worth the $$$.
